Horizon is a vibrant, high-calibre, award-winning community choir composed of 40+ talented singers aged 26 and over who are dedicated to quality choral singing. Under the skilled direction of artistic director Johanna Hildebrand and assistant director Katie Donnelly, Horizon has become a powerhouse on the Winnipeg choral scene known for their creativity, innovation, and energetic choral performances that engage a contemporary audience.
Created in the summer of 2013, Horizon began as an extension of Prairie Voices, allowing choristers who wanted to continue to sing beyond PV the opportunity to perform exciting and challenging choral music. Since its inception, Horizon has grown into a home for singers looking to hone their technique and performance. Horizon carries on Prairie Voices Inc.’s world-renowned tradition of bringing style, energy, and passion to the stage.
Horizon is a well-respected choir and has gained recognition as artistic leaders on the Winnipeg choral scene. A recipient of the Manitoba Choral Association Award for Artistic Excellence, Horizon has become a regular guest of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and have performed works by Derek Charke and Meredith Monk in the Winnipeg New Music Festival, in addition to being invited to perform with big names like The Tenors and The Eagles.
Johanna Hildebrand has enjoyed a life-long involvement in music of all styles and genres. Subsequent to the acquisition of Musical Arts and Education degrees from Canadian Mennonite University and the University of Manitoba, she has taught choir and fiddling in various schools, and presently teaches in the Seven Oaks School Division, where she runs a vibrant fiddling program. Johanna has performed and studied music since the age of two. Her musical interests have multiplied through the years; highlights include singing in Winnipeg’s Renaissance Voices, the Canadian Chamber Choir, and touring Canada on her fiddle with folk group The Wyrd Sisters. Johanna’s choral experience includes working with singers of all ages through university, community, public and private schools. She currently is the Artistic Director of Winnipeg based choir Horizon, whose recent engagements include performing with The Eagles, features in Winnipeg’s New Music Festival, and is a regular onstage with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Johanna has served as the choral director of Winnipeg’s LGBTQ2* choir the Rainbow Harmony Project, and has served as a guest conductor at various Manitoba choral days, including Manitoba Choral Association’s Provincial Honour Choirs. She is widely travelled, has never missed a Winnipeg Folk Festival, and looks forward to her daily walks with her giant German Shepherd, Chicken.
Katie Donnelly holds both a bachelor of music and education from the University of Manitoba. Katie currently teaches at Collège Jeanne-Sauvé and has spent her career exploring the various ways that students want to experience music, whether that be in band and choir or through music technology and musical theatre. Katie has worked in several musical areas including as assistant conductor for the University of Manitoba Concert Choir (2015-2016), for over a decade as a private voice and piano instructor, and recently as a provincial curriculum consultant for the French music technology program. Katie has been involved with Horizon as a singer since 2017 and is very excited to work alongside Johanna as assistant director.
